Android TV is coming to actual televisions in addition to other boxes and, I'm sure, a stick or 10 in the near future. It's not yet available in the UK but that may also change in the future. Supported apps will expand, voice search will target more services and prices will fall.
In addition to that, the gaming experience also seems to be inferior. Besides, Android TV may perhaps not be suitable for you if you are not a big fan of media content from Google’s movies & TV library. But then again, that was actually seen coming, especially for the reason that it was not included in the list of Google’s Pixel smartphones for the Android P developer preview. In addition to that, this sad news was actually already expected given that Google had already stopped selling the Nexus Player since the summer of 2016. So now, we all have the official confirmation – Google’s Nexus Player is dead. I believe the issue is with the nexus player and not the app.

You can send any content supported by Google Cast from your smartphone, tablet, or PC to the Nexus Player by opening the Google Cast app and treating it just like a Chromecast. Unfortunately, it doesn't support Miracast like the Fire TV, so you can't directly mirror your screen to your HDTV; you're limited to the services that work with Google Cast. For me, the magic of Chromecast is that it just works despite the lack of a physical connection between the phone or tablet and the television. Casting content to the Nexus Player should be just as magical, but in my first week with the device, I’ve experienced several glitches that have shaken my confidence.
No cables are included, and instructions are limited to a single card with two pictures on it. We suppose Google thinks everyone’s got this whole set-top box setup thing figured out. The game controller feels much better made than the Nexus Player’s stick remote, but its D-pad offers a less satisfying “click” than the Fire TV’s controller does. We also noticed that the Nexus Player’s game pad remote does not have hot-keys for play, pause, fast forward, or reverse. The voice search is handy if you want to bring up a specific YouTube video, but it doesn't let you access YouTube channels.

Netflix would recall where I was in the video, but this was due to Netflix' own useful tracking systems and not the Nexus Player, and it still took nearly ten seconds just to get back to the screen where I could load the video again. It's strange that out of Netflix, YouTube, and Food Network, it was the Food Network app that both performed the most quickly and did the best job of putting me back where I was in the middle of a video.

When Google announced Android TV (the Nexus Player’s underlying software) in June, it revealed that apps for the set-top box would be able to integrate Cast support. While it’s great for quickly getting to the video you want, it would be nice to have a dedicated remote control to fall back on, with on-screen menus for group viewing sessions and ideas on what to watch.
As noted in Install section, v5.0 build LRX21M and LRX21V don't seem to have ADB debugging options (i.e. for connecting to device over a network). Also, Sideload Launcher may not be needed as sideloaded Kodi shows up under Apps on Nexus Player's main screen. Nexus Player is an x86-64 (64-bit Intel Atom CPU) based Android digital media player co-developed by Google and Asus. Running the Android 5.0 "Lollipop" operating system, this Nexus Player was the first device to employ Google's Android TV platform. It feels very solid in the hand, though I found the analog sticks to feel just a little bit too tight for my tastes.
Users can access the Google Play store directly through the user interface to rent / buy movies, TV shows and stream play music. Someday, upgrading from a Chromecast to a Nexus Player or other Android TV device could be a no-brainer, but that won’t happen until Cast functionality becomes more fluid and less wonky, and until Android TV gets more apps. In the meantime, you won’t miss out on much by spending significantly less. The gaming component of Nexus Player is interesting as well, but you need a $40 controller—more than the price of Chromecast alone—to take full advantage, and it too needs a lot of work to reach its potential.
In reality, most app makers—including Google— haven’t bothered to add this level of Cast integration. So if you use Cast to open Google Play Music from your phone, you can’t use the remote to skip through tracks. If you start watching YouTube videos using the remote, you can’t use the mobile app to control playback or drop more videos into the queue. (For that matter, YouTube’s Android TV app doesn’t have a play queue at all.) As a result, you have to think about what device you’re going to use before you even start playback. The hardware remote for the Nexus Player is rather limited in functionality. These software remotes will give access to the menus of Kodi, otherwise not available through the Nexus Player hardware remote.
It is the second media player in the Google Nexus family of consumer devices. Originally running the Android 5.0 ("Lollipop") operating system, it is the first device to employ the Android TV platform. What it took to recognize the name was uninstalling the Google Home app and reinstalling it. So, I would like to call my Nexus Player "Living Room" whenever I cast to it, but everytime I add it it just shows up as Nexus Player. If you haven’t previously installed adb and fastboot, you can download them from Google. Some familiarity with basic Android operation and terminology. It would help if you’ve installed custom roms on other devices and are familiar with recovery.
